Scorpion calls have been on the rise the last few years especially in the areas around Stone Cliff and Little Valley. People who have been used to one or two a year are now seeing 5+ a month. What is the reason? Most of the calls are for the Arizona Bark Scorpion which has a very painful sting. They are not native to St George but are thought to have been brought in with the palm trees. As sommunites become more and more established and as there is more water and vegetation for scorpions to hide in they will spread further and become more common.

There are some things you can do that will make a big difference.

1. Trim you plants and bushes and clean up debris under them. This will give them less harborage area.

2. Make sure you have good weather stripping around doors and windows. This will make it harder for them to get into the house.

3. Seal any entry points into the home. Especially around piping and electrical lines. This is a very easy thing to do and will also help with mice and other pest.

4. Go out at night with a black light and see if you missed any spots. Hunting Scorpions with a black light can be a lot of fun. They will glow when shown under a black light and you can see any spots that have high activity.

Many people jump right to insect sprays and don't get the results they want. Scorpions have a very thick exoskeleton, this will require them to pick up more insecticide before they die. If you are using an over the counter product, you will not have much success. There are some very good products (None of them come premixed) and if combined with the preventions steps mentioned earlier you can get great results.

So you think you have mice?

Droppings are usually the first sign your home has mice. Gnaw marks and a characteristic musky odor also helps reveal their presence. Mice are active mostly at night, but they can also be seen during daylight hours.

Because a mouse is so small, it can gain entry into your home much more easily than rats. As a result, mouse infestations are estimated 20 times more common than rat infestations.

Some pets will catch and kill mice and rats. However, there are few situations in which they will adequately control the problem.

So what can be done to kill your rodents? The most important part is locating where they came from. How did the mouse get into your house? Large gaps around doors is most likely the source also, the air conditioning lines into you house can have a gap which allows mice access into your walls and too many other locations in your house.

Many locations in St George have high rodent populations (Entrada, Stone Cliff, Kayenta, Winchester and Diamond Valley) if you are near the outskirts of town you will most likely have rodent activity as well.

TRAPS

Snap Traps work great. While you can use almost any kind of food to catch a mouse, Shakespeare Pest Control has found that Peanut butter, Snickers or Slim Jims work best. Be sure to place plenty of traps throughout your home. If you think you have one mouse place 4 traps, if you think you have 10 mice place 50 traps. When baiting, put bait on the traps and leave them out for a few days before you set them, then rebait them and set them again. This will increase your chance of success.

STICKY TRAPS work well also. But you need to kill the mouse yourself because it’s not a fast kill.

BAIT STATIONS

Bait stations are an excellent way of keeping mice population low around your house especially if you live in Entrada or the Ledges. They need to be locked and secured to protect kids and pets, but will significantly reduce the chances of a mouse infestation.

Sealing up the gaps and holes around your home, is the best way to keep them from getting in. Mice will ear through spray foam so you need to use steel wool to fill the hole or gap first then caulk over it. This will eliminate that problem.

What to do if you get Bed Bugs

          Are you tired of getting nibbled on at night… and not by a loved one? Have no fear! Shakespeare Pest Control is here! We would like to share with you some tips on how to handle the little pests. While St. George, Utah may not be the Mecca of Bed Bugs in the United States, they are still very common. The following are some helpful tips:

• Don’t freak out and throw everything away. They are hard to get rid of, but they are not impossible!
• Don’t move things to other rooms. It will greatly increase your ability to get rid of the infestation if there is less clutter. So, clean up and simplify… get rid of anything you don’t need anymore. However, DON’T donate it to the thrift stores! You never know what might be carrying Bed Bugs.
• If you are renting, notify your landlord immediately.
• Vacuum box springs and all the edges. Be very thorough with the vacuuming. When you are finished, dispose of the vacuum bag in the outside trash in another sealed bag.
• Don’t start sleeping on the couch or in other rooms. It will just make the problem worse. Bed Bugs are attracted to you, so if you move, they move, too. You need to make a room where you can sleep. So, strip the bedding and put it all in the dryer. The heat of the dryer will kill the Bed Bugs. Then, carefully vacuum the mattress, focusing especially on the edges, box springs, and any other nook or cranny. It is possible to cover the mattress with a bed bug cover as well.
• Remember that throwing away your mattress isn’t the solution. While up to 60% of Bed Bugs are on your bed and box springs, there still are about 40% of the Bed Bugs in other places. So, just throwing away your bed and spending a load of money on a new one will not fix the problem.
• Like we talked about earlier, washing and drying all linens helps. Remember, it isn’t the washing that kills the Bed Bugs, it is the heat of the DRYER that will kills them.
